Booking travel with points

What are transferable points?

Points from card programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One Miles and Citi ThankYou can be moved into airline and hotel programs. That's usually where they're worth the most, because an award seat or night can cost far fewer points than its cash price suggests.

How do I know if a redemption is any good?

Work out cents per point: the cash price minus the taxes and fees you'd still pay, divided by the points, times 100. Compare it with what the same points get at a fixed rate, like cash back or the card's travel portal. If transferring doesn't beat that, use the simpler option.

Can I move points back after transferring?

No. Transfers to airlines and hotels are one way, so find the award seat or room first and only then transfer the points you need.

How long do transfers take?

Most airline transfers arrive within minutes, but some programs take a day or more. Award space can disappear in the meantime, so check the timing for that partner before you rely on it.

What's a transfer bonus?

A limited-time extra on transfers to one partner. A 20% bonus turns 1,000 card points into 1,200 airline miles, which makes an award cheaper in card points. Bonuses usually run for a few weeks.

Are award flights free?

Not quite. You still pay taxes and government fees, and some programs add carrier surcharges that can run to hundreds of dollars on certain routes. The same seat can cost very different fees depending on which program you book through.

The app I'm building In progress

Atlas (working name)

A trip app I'm building for friends who plan together. Plan a trip once, share it with friends, by link or publicly, and anyone can turn it into their own copy in one tap. After a trip you rank the places you went, so your friends' picks get better over time.

  • Private details stay private when you share
  • Copy a friend's trip, or one stop, into yours
  • Rank places after a trip
  • Plan with your group
